Description
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is seeking an innovative & multi skilled candidate to join its team in Pakistan, as a Regional Researcher – Hydrologist. This position will be based in Lahore with the flexibility to work from Islamabad.
The Researcher – Hydrologist is responsible for performing a variety of surface and groundwater hydrological modeling, geophysical investigations, and rainwater harvesting studies in the Indus and Non-Indus basins for various donor-funded water resources projects within the IWMI Pakistan portfolio. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, designing, and implementing groundwater management strategies to achieve sustainable water management through improved practices.
The candidate must possess advanced knowledge of surface-groundwater hydrological modeling, remote sensing applications in water resources and irrigation, geophysical modeling, and rainwater harvesting for groundwater recharge studies, as well as have good stakeholder engagement experience. Collaborating with project leadership and national and international partners, the Researcher will be part of a multinational and multidisciplinary team contributing to the development of groundwater and rainwater harvesting models for the basin. This involves providing state-of-the-art modeling tools, guidelines, training, and facilitation for analysis and research for development.
Additionally, the Researcher will organize project-related events, workshops, training sessions, and fieldwork involving various stakeholders, while also contributing to the writing of donor reports and research publications.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead in conducting relevant research and provide expertise in hydrological modeling to national programs, assessing climate, surface water, and groundwater resources and their efficient use.
- Design and execute rainwater harvesting facilities for managed aquifer recharge studies to understand and quantify spatial and temporal groundwater management at different scales.
- Lead the technical tasks on groundwater modeling projects that may include, but are not limited to, quantifying the volumes of groundwater used and sustainably available under current and future climate and socio-economic conditions.
- Calibrate and validate the groundwater model for different land use and climate change scenarios.
- Parameterize the groundwater model using the collected data from different data repositories.
- Lead in carrying out analytical work for compiling earth land surface datasets, including rainfall, digital elevation model (DEM), watershed characteristics, soil characteristics, and land use land cover data from various satellite remote sensing archives.
- Demonstrate an excellent command in data review, planning regional investigations, and interpretation of aquifer parameters from aquifer tests, using Geographic Information System
- (GIS) applications to develop and review model inputs and outputs for the Indus and Non-Indus basin study area.
- Take the lead in stakeholder engagements with relevant government departments and partners to ensure that important local, national, and regional demands in the Indus basin for research for development are identified and incorporated into the research activities specific to hydrologic modeling.
- Facilitate participatory processes; stakeholder engagement and partnerships; co-designing of innovations; and project management.
- Support the IWMI Country Representative in managing other relevant bilateral projects.
- Identify new research trends and niches and develop multi-year multi-partner proposals for innovative research.
- Lead and contribute to proposal writing and fundraising opportunities for bilateral and multilateral funding sources.
- Provide information on relevant projects and research results and breakthroughs for communication to donors, research users, partners, networks, and policy platforms.
- Disseminate research findings via peer-reviewed publications; convene and attend workshops, conferences, and webinars in various international, regional, and national settings.
Requirements
- MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE and KNOWLEDGE
REQUIRED:
- PhD or equivalent qualification in agricultural engineering, hydrology, water resources, irrigation engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in research, with project management experience in Pakistan.
- Proven knowledge of surface-ground hydrological modeling tools and methodologies.
- Exposure in working with the design and development of rainwater harvesting facilities for groundwater recharge within the Basin.
- Prior experience in computing changes in water storage on different spatio-temporal bases.
- Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing approaches for developing hydrological and hydraulic models in data-scarce environments.
- Proven experience in developing policies to improve groundwater recharge and management in areas where groundwater is the primary source of irrigation water.
- Experience in engaging with regional and international professional networks and building strong partnerships with various categories of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated evidence of participatory processes; ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders; and excellent project management skills.
- Excellent track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals, research impact, and other acknowledgments.
- SKILLS and ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Strong analytical and numerical skills with the ability to process large temporal and spatial datasets in a Python environment.
- Proficiency in utilizing advanced spatial analysis and Geographic Information Systems tools, as well as hydrological modeling approaches, for multiple scale assessments.
- Independent and critical scientific thinking, including a solid understanding of the strengths and limitations of spatial tools for water resource assessments at various scales.
- Ability to explain development challenges in the complex interdisciplinary water, environment, and climate sectors.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment, with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
LANGUAGE PROFICINECY:
Excellent oral and written language skills in English, including effective listening and strong verbal and written communication abilities.
